I went on a road trip with my friend she had just graduated with her Ph.D. We went to visit another friend and her amazing home. Check out this beautiful view from her deck in Berkeley California. On this trip, we were lucky enough to stop at Reno and Lake Tahoe and we were able to visit San Francisco. I wanted a way to say thank you for letting us stay in her beautiful home, so I offered to organize her pantry space.

Here’s a quick look at her kitchen and a pantry makeover was long overdue. As all of you know I love finding storage solutions and creating a well-organized space. This was a great way for me to say thanks by leaving her with a well-organized pantry.

1. Take Everything out

The first thing I did was empty the kitchen pantry.

2. Go through everything

I checked the expiration date on all the food items and placed expired items in plastic bags to go to the trash. If something could be recycled, that went in the recycling bin.

Next, I made a pile of odds and ends that needed to be sorted. Now it was time to have fun organizing the pantry items and creating a space that would give her easy access.

3. Place things back in the pantry

Here’s a quick reveal of what the pantry looked like when I was done. The big thing I needed to do was arrange the pantry storage in a way that was successful for my friend. If I organized it the way I wanted it to it might not have been a way that functioned for her. We talked about the way she envisioned her pantry being organized and her priorities for utilizing the shelf space.

Another goal I had was to make sure the floor space was open so she could easily get in and out of her pantry.

It’s a good idea to start by putting like items together. I put snacks together, pantry staples and canned goods together, and cereal boxes together. She has a dog who has a special diet plan so we made sure to put the items for her in the right place. She is a huge coffee lover so one of her biggest requests was to have all her coffee items within easy reach.

I put all of her food storage items together and I also put all the paper products together so they would be quick and easy to grab. I made sure the items she used on a regular basis were within easy reach.

Anything that was not used on a regular basis was put on the top shelf, so you’d need a stool to get them. I put her emergency candles and walkie-talkies in an easy-to-find spot in case there would be an earthquake. Under the bottom shelves, I put some of her storage containers.

Again the space needed to be functional for her on a daily basis, not the way I would organize my own space.

If you are planning to organize your own food pantry, here are a couple of ideas that can help you create extra storage space:

• Add lazy susans for smaller items. This helps you take advantage of hard to reach deep shelves
• Utilize a pantry door organizer to optimize storage on the back of the door.
• Add wire shelves to make the most of vertical space.
• Use baskets or clear containers or clear bins to organize similar kitchen items, small items, spice jars, etc
