Smart 5x8 Bathroom Layout Ideas to Transform Your Small Bathroom (2024)

Ever felt like your 5×8 bathroom is too cramped? I get it, as I have 2 small bathrooms in my house that are about the same size. But just because the space is more compact than usual, doesn’t mean you have to limit your design. There are simple ways to make it feel way more functional and spacious.

In this post, I’ll be sharing some neat layout ideas that can transform your 5×8 small bathroom using smart floor plan ideas, and you can even have a wall-to-wall shower or tub, a corner shower, or a double vanity!

Understanding the dimensions of a 5×8 bathroom

A 5×8 bathroom is like a designated cozy corner, measuring 5 feet in width and 8 feet in length. It’s a balanced space, and super common in smaller houses.

Now, compare this to a 5×7 bathroom, which is a bit more snug due to that one-foot reduction in length. A 5 by 8 bathroom gives you a bit more maneuver room.

When compared to a 8×8 bathroom which is a common bathroom size in larger houses, a 5 x 8 bathroom is certainly smaller, but not too cramped. So I’d say a 5ft by 8ft bathroom is space efficient, without sacrificing any more functionalities.

With some well thought-out layout ideas, you can definitely make your 5×8 bathroom into a cozy and functional space!

Layout Ideas for 5×8 Bathrooms

It can be difficult to brainstorm how you should design your small bathroom, so I drew up some floor plans for you, with several layout ideas for a shower, tub, and double sink. Don’t be pressured to follow these layouts exactly; you can tweak and adjust them in any way you like, as long as it fits your needs.

For example, you can move the door to any walls that are not obstructed by a fixture or built-in. So use these floor plans with flexibility 🙂

And without any more chit-chat, here are 6 layout ideas for your 5×8 bathroom:

5×8 bathroom layout idea #1 with wall-to-wall shower

This one is a common layout used for 5×7 bathrooms and 5×8 bathrooms. The sink, toilet, and shower are all lined up next to each other on one wall, which leaves an open space for walking and movement. If you have a similar door placement, it also creates a clear linear path into the small space.

Like I said, these floor plans are flexible. So instead of a wall-to-wall shower, you might like changing it for a bathtub instead, or even just a standard shower that is smaller.

Similar to the layout before this, there is a wall-to-wall shower on one side, but this time the toilet and sink are on the opposite wall. With the door centered in the open area, this layout can give more sense of spaciousness in the 5×8 bathroom.

An extra tip would be to put some decor on the wall next to the shower, so as you open the door, you are greeted with delight every time!

5×8 bathroom layout idea #3 with bathtub

The layout here is almost identical to the idea #1. In this layout I used a bathtub and shower in one, so that if you are a bath fanatic, you get to enjoy a nice bath everyday even in a small bathroom.

You would see the vanity right when you open the bathroom door, which I think is a smart layout move given vanity is one of the most used fixtures in a bathroom.

It’s a functional choice because you have immediate access to your toiletries and other essentials, so you can easily go through your morning and evening routine as soon as you walk in. And with a well designed vanity and mirror combo, you’ll create a beautiful vignette that brings joy every time you enter the space!

Here’s a corner of one of my small bathrooms with sink and toilet side by side, where I built a DIY Floating Vanity.

5×8 bathroom layout idea #4 with double sink

Who says you can’t have a double sink with a small bathroom? Well, not me. It’s definitely possible, like in this layout. Just use a corner shower, and put the toilet next to it. This opens up a large space in the middle and frees up the entire opposite wall for a double sink vanity.

I’m a huge fan of double sinks as my husband and I always get ready at the same time. This is my own DIY Floating Vanity with Double Sink that I designed and built for our master bathroom.

In this layout, the toilet and corner shower are next to each other on one wall, and the sink is on the opposite wall. But this time, the sink is not facing the toilet, but the door.

You can also create a wow moment here with a beautiful vanity, and you can even use the extra space between the sink and shower for some extra storage or decor.

5×8 bathroom layout idea #6 with bigger corner shower

With this standard layout that should be familiar to you already, the toilet, sink, and shower are all against one wall. This not only creates more space for storage, it allows for a bigger corner shower at the same time. There’s definitely a less cramped feel with this layout since the shower and toilet aren’t so squashed up together.

Small bathrooms don’t have to be stressful to design. You just need a little patience and creativity to make the most out of the tiny space. And with the 6 layout ideas and floor plans I shared with you, you now have a headstart in designing your dream bathroom!
