We use TVP (textured vegetable protein) to make homemade meatless bacon bits. TVP (or TSP) is a high-protein dehydrated vegetable/soy product with a chewy, meaty texture. It’s a popular ingredient for meat substitute among vegans and vegetarians. It doesn’t have much taste on its own. Due to its dried sponge-like nature, it soaks up vegan bacon seasoning like no other. This makes it the best candidate for our vegan bacon bits.

We only need 7 ingredients for this recipe.

  • TVP (textured vegetable protein) or TSP – You should be able to find TVP/TSP in most supermarkets or Asian groceries. If you can’t find it at your local stores, you can buy it at Amazon.

Vegan Bacon Seasoning:

  • Light Soy Sauce
  • Maple Syrup
  • Liquid Smoke – all you need is a tiny bit of liquid smoke for the smoky flavor.
  • Spices- Garlic Powder, Onion Powder, and Smoked Paprika.

How to make

  1. Preheat the oven to 175°C/350°F. Combine all the vegan bacon seasoning in a large food container (with a lid) and mix thoroughly.
  2. Add dried TVP (textured vegetable protein) into the container.
  3. Put the lid on and seal tight. Shake the container until the TVP is well-coated with the seasoning.
  4. Line the baking tray with parchment paper. Place seasoned TVP on the tray and spread evenly without overlapping. Bake in the oven for about 5 minutes then take it out. It will become crunchier when it cools down.

How to Store?

These Vegan Bacon Bits have been dehydrated in the oven. So you can store them in an air-tight sealed glass jar or food container. They will last up to 3 months without a problem. Just make sure you use a clean utensil every time you serve.
